2023-24 Season

We are thrilled to present the lineup for our 2023-24 season, plus a surprise for 2024-25! All shows at Theatre South in First Congo Church.

The Wasp by Morgan Lloyd Malcolm (September 22–October 8, 2023)

A twisting two-hander, a psychological thriller from the acclaimed author of Belongings. Heather and Carla haven’t seen each other since school. Their lives have taken very different paths—Carla lives a hand-to-mouth existence while Heather has a high-flying career, husband and a beautiful home. And yet, here they are in a café having tea and making awkward conversation. That is until Heather presents Carla with a bag containing a significant amount of cash and an unexpected proposition…

Morgan Lloyd Malcolm’s electric new thriller asks how far beyond the playground we
carry our childhood experiences and to what lengths some people are willing to go to in
order to come to terms with them.

This is an American premiere! Yep, Quark will be the first theatre in the US to produce this play that has had multiple successful productions in the UK, Australia and other locations throughout the world. A movie version starring Naomie Harris (Oscar nominee for Moonlight) and Natalie Dormer (late of Game of Thrones) is currently in production.

The Sound Inside by Adam Rapp (March 1–March 17, 2024)

When Bella Baird, an isolated creative writing professor at Yale, begins to mentor a brilliant but enigmatic student named Christopher, the two form an unexpectedly intense bond. As their lives and the stories they tell about themselves become intertwined in unpredictable ways, Bella makes a surprising request of Christopher that neither knows if he can fulfill. Brimming with suspense, Rapp’s riveting play explores the limits of what one person can ask of another.

The show played the 2019/2020 season on Broadway and was nominated for six Tony Awards, including: Best Play, Best Direction and Best Actress for Mary-Louise Parker (which she won!) This is a REGIONAL premiere!

Constellations by Nick Payne (May 10–May 26, 2024)

One relationship. Infinite possibilities.

In the beginning Marianne and Roland meet at a party. They go for a drink, or perhaps they don’t. They fall madly in love and start dating, but eventually they break up. After a chance encounter in a supermarket they get back together, or maybe they run into each other and Marianne reveals that she’s now engaged to someone else and that’s that. Or perhaps Roland is engaged. Maybe they get married, or maybe their time together will be tragically short.

Nick Payne’s Constellations is a play about free will and friendship; it’s also about quantum multiverse theory, love, and honey.

The show played Broadway in 2015. The cast starred Jake Gyllenhaal (in his Broadway debut) and Ruth Wilson. Ruth Wilson received a Tony nomination for Best Actress. This is a Regional premiere!

And now for a little surprise…

QUARK THEATRE SEASON SEVEN (2024/2025)

Yes! We are also announcing Season Seven! Or perhaps it might be more accurate to say we are announcing our potential Season Seven. Here’s the deal:

We are aiming to produce a three show season of all original plays by Memphis playwrights!

The caveat is that the shows we are looking for must still fit the profile of the kind of shows Quark produces. Meaning high quality writing, excellent roles for actors, small cast size, little to no set requirements, one act, no intermission 90 minutes or less, etcetera.

To that end, we are now accepting submissions. CLICK HERE for more information and how to submit.

We are hoping the playwrights can be involved in the production if their play is chosen. There will be a blind submission process to avoid any possibility of favoritism. None of the founders of Quark are eligible to submit scripts. We want this to be for the Memphis theatre community. In the event that we do not receive three scripts that we think fit our (admittedly subjective) needs, we reserve the right to produce only two or one or zero original scripts. But we have every intention of doing a full season of original work. And we are very excited by the process!
